2018 Challenge Cup Ice Hockey Tournement

Photos from the Challenge Cup played in Adelaide, South Australia at the Ice Arena on 30 January to 3 February 2018.  It is the largest ice hockey tournament in the Southern Hemisphere and continues on from the highly successful 2017 event also hosted in Adelaide.  The competition was divided into 4 grades: Womens, C grade, B grade and A grade.  The round robin competition culminated in 4 grand finals played one after the other on Saturday afternoon with the A grade being the last of the event.

Pina Koalas, based in Sydney won the Women’s final against the Australian Defence Force (ADF) 2-0

The C Grade Grand Final was played between the Brisbane based Southern Stars Navigators and the Kodiaks, based in Sydney.  The Southern Stars would come out winners in a close 1-0 encounter.

The ADF fielded 3 teams in the Challenge Cup, and the B Grade team would be the most successful playing in the grand final against the Slavin Eagles, a team put together by Vladimir Mihal, a legend in 1980’s ice hockey played in Adelaide.  The Eagles were led by charismatic captain Sami Mantere.  The ADF would be too strong for the Eagles, winning the grand final 4-0

The blue ribbon event, the A grade final found last year’s champion, the Adelaide Tigers up against the Brisbane Puckers who had managed to draft 2 Adelaide players in Jamie Holland and Ales Kratoska, both designated as current Adelaide Adrenaline imports.  The Puckers would run rings around the bewildered Tigers outfit and close in goals they were lethal finding the net time and time again in the 1st period to end up with a 5-0 lead, not something the home crowd were expecting.  The second period was a tight affair as the Tigers finally found the right formula, and eventually the back of the net though Ben Gebert.  However it would be a shortlived resurgence as the Puckers countered and with another consolation goal to the Tigers would eventually take the big one 7-2.
