13/05/2023 AIHL Adelaide Adrenaline v Sydney Ice Dogs 3-5

Selected photos from the Australian Ice Hockey League game between Adelaide Adrenaline v Sydney Ice Dogs playing on 13/05/2023 at the Ice Arena, Adelaide, South Australia.  These two teams are traditional rivals from when the Adrenaline was the Avalanche team back in the Oddy/Thilthorpe dynasty days, but now there are new faces on both teams.  The Adrenaline team is a much younger outfit overall than the Ice Dogs team.  Matus Trnka was the goaltender for the Adrenaline home team, and Jakob Doornbos for the Ice Dogs.

The first period started off with the Ice Dogs racing to a 2-0 lead by the 14min44sec mark, so the Adrenaline would be doing the chasing.  This was in contrast to other games where they scored the first goals.  However, Adrenaline’s Daniel Chen would reduce the margin to one, scored unassisted on a powerplay.  The Ice Dogs offender in the box was captain Daneil Pataky for tripping.  Soon after the Adrenaline would tie the score at 2-a-piece when Tyler Leeming scored from assists from Steve Best and Yu Kevin, their Taiwanese import.  Despite an interference call on Adrenaline’s Zac Steele at 5:23 the score remained at 2-all at the end of the period.  Shots on goal saw Trnka facing 20 shots, and Doornbos only 9.

The 2nd period saw the Adrenaline’s import Andrew Hamilton score the go-ahead goal after assist from Joey MacDougall and Julian Friederich.  It took until the 7min mark before the Ice Dogs evened the ledger with Strat Allen scored and the assists coming from Grant Toulmin and Kyle Hunter.  No penalties occurred in the period, very unlike an Adelaide vs Ice Dogs game!  Shots on goal for the period were Trnka facing 14 shots, to Doornbos 9 shots again.

The 3rd period opened with a goal to the Ice Dogs with less than a minute played.  The goal scorer was Jeremy Vasquez from long time Ice Dog Cameron Todd.  A penalty to Ice Dogs Max Miller at  15:57 for roughing gave the Adrenaline team the powerplay but the Ice Dogs penalty kill unit stood firm.  The momentum continued in the Ice Dogs favour with Doornbos stopping anything the Adrenaline threw at him.  Thomas Voller put another on the board at 11:27 to make life difficult for the young Adrenaline side.  The assists came from Mackenzie Bolder and Connor Lee.  Ice Dogs Shannon McGregor fell foul of the referees with a slashing penalty at 6:17.  Adrenaline’s Jeremy Friederich didn’t waste time and only 7secs later slotted one past Doornbos to bring the score to 3-5.  The assists came from Hamilton and Zach Boyle.  The score remained the same to the end of the period but the excitement didn’t stop there.  The two teams decided to have it out on the buzzer and 6 penalties were handed out with 0:00 showing on the clock, with penalties to be served at the next game(?).  Roughing penalties went to Adrenaline’s Julian Freiderich (2mins), Joey MacDougall (2+10mins), Ice Dogs Daniel Pataky (2mins) and Alec Stephenson (2+10mins).  Shots on goal for the game saw Trnka face 47 shots, to Doornbos facing 29 shots.
