05/08/2017 AIHL Adelaide Avalanche (Adrenaline) v Perth Thunder 4-3 – Heritage round

AIHL Heritage Round. As a commemoration to the AIHL teams of old, the teams would be wearing previous jerseys. In the case of the Adrenaline, Greg Campbell and Mortgage Choice got behind the team and donated Avalanche ‘blue’ jerseys for the game to be auctioned off afterwards to raise money for a great cause, Camp Quality, for kids with cancer. This game brought a lot of emotion, both from players and spectators for the Adrenaline. Former head coach in the Avalanche era and early Adrenaline years John Botterill returned to the bend as assistant coach. The crowd donned whatever Avalanche clothes they had a lot of horns to make NOISE for the home team. The ‘Avalanche’ team didn’t disappoint as they scored the first goal within a minute to send the home crowd into a frenzy. Joey Rezek received a feed from Cam Critchlow. Only a few minutes later the crowd went metal again as Ales Kratoska and Joey Rezek combined to give Cam Critchlow his first for the night. Greg Oddy, who was there in the first Avalanche game in 2000 was playing close to his best! The Thunder would score through Breault to Bernard to peg back the difference. The Avalanche were causing some serious damage as the piled on two more goals via Rezek and Critchlow so by the end of the 2nd period the last placed (Adrenaline) Avalanche were up 4-1 against 2nd placed Thunder. However the Thunder would start to claw themselves back into the game in the 3rd period. Attack after attack launched by the Thunder reaped rewards with two more goals, one through Breault, and the game was in the balance at 4-3 when Adrenaline’s Kratoska got given a 2min penalty. The crowd got even rowdier and helped pushed the emotional Avalanche team over the line for a well deserved win and in a very entertaining game. At the 2nd period break, past players and officials including myself stepped out onto the ice as recognition for all their past efforts. I calculated the Sunday game was to be my 150th AIHL game I have photographed which included 4 Avalanche years and all Adrenaline years.
