Photos of the Canada Day AIHL game between the Adelaide Adrenaline and the CBR Brave played at the Ice Arena, Adelaide, South Australia on 02/07/2018. The game had to be rescheduled for much later than normal after delayed flights caused the CBR Brave team to get from Perth where they had played the night before to Adelaide 3hrs late. The Adrenaline were without captain Josef Rezek who would seeing out several games due to an injury. Ales Kratoska filled the captain’s shoes for the game. Returning to the Adrenaline were Darren Corstens and Jake Riley, who had been playing high school hockey in North America the last season. For the Brave, Jimmy Byers would be an addition with Joey Hughes absent. The late start and inconvenience didn’t affect the Brave as they dominated the game from the start once again with their star lineup. By the end of the period they held a 2 goal lead with goals scored by import Chris Leveille (assist to Jimmy Byers and Wehebe Darge) and Darge (assists to Ainars Podzins and Leveille). The Adrenaline had only managed 2 shots on goal against the Brave’s 18! Two penalties to the Adrenaline’s Caleb Apperson for interference and Harley Anderson for hooking didn’t help. The Adrenaline would need to regroup and find something special.
The second period was al one way traffic for the Brave as they piled on 4 unanswered goals with Leveille picking up a second for the night, captain Matt Harvey adding 2 to his tally and Podzins chiming in for one of his own. Both teams had 2 penalties each, Adrenaline’s Alex Adams for hooking and Steve Best for a major misconduct with 5secs to go in the period after referee Chris Parks waved off what the Adrenaline team thought was a goal. The Brave had Kai Miettinen for holding and Harvey for tripping in the box. Shots on goal was 13 for the Brave and 6 for the Adrenaline. The Brave now held a 6-0 lead which didn’t bode well for the Adrenaline.
The 3rd period saw the Brave be confident enough to change the goalie as Jake Doornbos took his turn in between the pipes. This change seemed to spur on the Adrenaline who were looking to salvage some pride. Their determination was rewarded although it took until the 9:11 minute mark of the period for them to find the back of the net through Andrew Stapleton with the assists going to Adams and an ecstatic Dylan Pope. With 1:28 on the clock the Adrenaline would strike again with Zach Boyle being rewarded for his tireless effort all night and the assists to Pope again and Adams. The Adrenaline had held the Brave scoreless for the period with both teams having 12 shots on goal. Penalties had been 2 a piece but the Adrenaline had been disadvantaged with Best sitting out the first 10mins of the long 20min last period. Final score Brave 6, Adrenaline 2.
