2019 Viking Cup – Inline Hockey

Selected photos from the 2019 Viking Cup Inline Hockey Tournament held at the Gawler Recreation Centre over the Easter weekend.  The local North Vikings inline hockey club host this annual event comprising three divisions, Division 1 for the experienced adults and older ‘kids’, Division 2 for the lesser experienced, and the Juniors.  The focus of this post is the combined Blackwood Blaze/Stadium 19 Gorillas Juniors team as they attempt to wrestle the cup from North Vikings home teams.  The North Vikings would field 3 teams, allegedly even teams, Thunder, Flames and Ice.  Bendigo Blaze inline hockey club would field a team in each division and had participated in this tournament before.  It would be the Gorillas first.  Each team played 4 minor round games before the finals.

The Gorillas faced the Bendigo Blaze first up and made light work of it with a 15-3 win.  Their second game against the Viking Ice was more difficult but their experienced line were able to dominate in their 5-2 win.  The next day saw them come up against the formidable Viking Thunder who were expected to dominate the comp. This was proved correct with the Thunder taking care of the new kids on the block Gorillas in a dominant 7-3 win.  Later that day the Gorillas would tackle the Viking Flames in a much more even encounter, with the Flames eventually able to shake off the Gorillas for a 7-5 win.  So going into the Easter finals day the Gorillas sat on 2 wins and 2 losses.  A last minute decision to give the last placed Bendigo Blaze team an extra game for their distance traveled to the event resulted in the first placed Thunder going straight through to the Grand Final.  The 2nd placed Viking Flames and 3rd placed Gorillas would face off in the first semi with the Gorillas this time able to get on top of the Flames 4-1 and have another crack at the highly fancied home Viking Thunder team.  In the Grand Final two early goals to the Thunder saw the Gorillas facing an uphill battle but were able to avoid a shutout to come away with a respectable 2-5 scoreline in their first Viking Cup encounter.  The Gorillas enthusiastically celebrated their second place in the Viking Cup much to the amusement of the home crowd!
