20/06/2021 C Grade ice hockey – Blackhawks v Jokers 4-3OT

C Grade ice hockey action on Sunday afternoon had the Blackhawks facing the Jokers.  In goals for the Blackhawks was Nick Siebert, and for the Jokers, Mathew Peterson.  Both teams managed to hold each other at bay for most of the period with neither being able to score early.  The Blackhawks gave the Jokers 3 chances with 3 of their players in the penalty box, at 12:09 Sebastien Haiart for hooking, at 10:14 Tom Mara for interference and Cameron Bridgeman for tripping at 7:24.  The Jokers in turn had Louis Nikolic in for slashing at 8:28 remaining in the period.  With 3 seconds left of the last Blackhawks penalty, the Jokers John Kendall scored after assists from Todd Aufderheide and Nikolic.

The Blackhawks were able to even the score with 4:41 remaining in the 2nd period when the mercurial Neil Collier got one past Peterson.  The assists went to hard working Jay Gunton and Mitchell Geraghty.  A tripping penalty to Blackhawks Will Gerace with 4:41 remaining went unanswered on the scoreboard by the Jokers.  With only half a minute remaining, Jokers Chris Kelly was deemed for interference and headed to the penalty box to give the Blackhawks a good chance going into the 3rd period.

The Blackhawks negated their powerplay when Luke John fell foul with the referee for intentional body check and was given a 2min penalty plus a 10min major.  Mitchell Bacon sat out the 2min penalty for him.  A few minutes later, Jokers big man Laurent Freiderich headed to the penalty box, bemused with his tripping penalty.  The Blackhawks were unable to score with the powerplay.  However, a short time later at 11:51 remaining they scored the go-ahead goal with Neil Collier again finding a way past Peterson.  The assists came from Ethan Cotton and Cherie Reid.  The Jokers weren’t done yet and levelled the score with just over 10mins remaining as Kendall added his second goal for the game after assists from Nikolic and Aufderheide.  Blackhawks mark Goudge headed to the bench for hooking at 8:17 sending the Jokers into powerplay mode but it took them the entire time to eventually score past Siebert.  The goal that put the Jokers in front came from Roydon Mackay and the assists from Nikolic and Aufderheide (both scoring 3 pts for the game).  Staring down the barrel, the Blackhawks dug deep and sent the game into overtime when they scored with 1:42 remaining as Gunton got through the Jokers defence.  The assists came from Gerace and John.

Overtime is played as 5min 3-on-3 period.  Blackhawks Ethan Cotton got a breakaway and scored unassisted to give the Blackhawks a much needed win.  Shots on goal saw Blackhawks Siebert face 24 shots, and Jokers Peterson face a miserly but economical 14 shots.
