2/07/2023 AIHL Adelaide Adrenaline v Perth Thunder 2-6

Selected photos (even more not on website) from the Australian Ice Hockey League game between Adelaide Adrenaline and Perth Thunder played on 1/07/2023 at the Ice Arena, Adelaide, South Australia.  The Adrenaline would be swapping their regular dark blue jerseys for special bright red Canada Day commemorative jerseys (to be auctioned off after the event).  In between the pipes for the Adrenaline would be Matus Trnka, and for the Thunder, Kristian Stead.  The Adrenaline would kick off the scoring early 2mins in, with import Brett Radford finding the back of the net.  Assists came from Joey MacDougall and Steve Best.  Plenty of penalties occurred from the 11:36 minute mark until the end of the period but the score did not change.  The Adrenaline were able to see off a 3-on-5 short time when Daniel O’Handley (boarding at 11:36) and Noah Maley (holding at 9:46) took a breather.  Thunder’s Garcia would be done for boarding at 7:10, Adrenaline’s Andrew Chen for holding at 4:21 and Thunder’s Riley Langille for slashing at 1:35, giving the Adrenaline a short powerplay in the 2nd period.  Shots on goal for the period saw Trnka face 13, and Stead face 11.  The 1-0 scoreline showed how tight the period was.

Thunders’ Connor Jean would level the score at 17:07 on the clock.  The assists came for Ben Breault and import CJ Garcia.  Garcia would however be sent to the penalty box a short time later at 15:21 for high-sticking.  He was joined by team mate Breault for interference at 14:31, giving the Adrenaline a real opportunity to score, but that wasn’t to be.  Adrenaline’s import Coy Provost would be done for holding the stick at 12:38, and Thunder’s D man who had plenty of Adelaide ice hockey in the NHSL and PHL, James (Jamey) Woodman for hooking at 7:27.  The penalties did not change the scoreline and the score was 1-1 at the end of the period.  Shots on goal for the period were 8-a-piece.

After the Zamboni resurfacing break the Thunder came out meaning business and posted 4 unanswered goals with the last goal scored at 10:35, to well and truly give the Adrenaline a reason to show why they were higher up the ladder.  A shame for the spectators as the game had been so tight up to the end of the 2nd period.  The goals came from Kieren Webster (assists, Andrew Cox and Lynden Lodge), Jordan Kyros (assists Webster and Woodman), Cos (unassisted) and Jean (assists, Lodge and Garcia).  This was all despite the Thunder being in penalty trouble, as Lodge had a 2 min penalty for boarding at 14:19 and Woodman for hooking at 12:52.  The pain didn’t end for the Adrenaline, as Nathaniel Benson was deemed to be tripping his opponent at 9:02, but the Thunder didn’t score on the powerplay.  The Adrenaline were able to get a late consolation goal at 3:54 on a powerplay as Thunder’s Yannic Lodge sat in the naughty box for interference.  Adrenaline’s Jeremy Friederich was swapped for Trnka.  Shortly afterwards Jean was able to post the 6th goal for the Thunder after assist from Langille and Breault.  Shots on goal for the game saw Trnka face 28 shots and Friederich 9 shots, against Thunder’s Stead 30 shots.
