The 2024 Backbone Hillclimb (aka Mt Alma) was run on the weekend of 4-5/05/2024 on Mt Alma Road in the Inman Valley, South Australia. About 120 drivers competed in the event with some drivers sharing cars. The event had no been run for a few years after the highly successful 10 year span previously. The cars/drivers would be split into two “packets” of cars completing their run up the hill and returning back down the hill before the next packet did. Each driver would complete a number of runs up the hill (potentially up to 4 on both days culminating with the last run close to the setting sun, or golden hour!) with their fastest single run counting towards placings (ie not accumulative times). Five seconds would be added onto their time for every bollard hit. There were 2 chicanes containing bollards.
At the pointy end with hillclimb specialist cars of Modified Vehicle/4WD it was going to be the 1000hp Subaru WRX of Douglas Johnson as Dan Day would not be competing in his own 1000hp Subaru WRX as per the previous year. He would instead use another more sedate Subaru WRX. The Nissan GTR R35 of Nick Streckeisen was back along with another two GTR R35s.
Johnson would take out the event with the fastest overall time of 43.64secs. Second fastest was Henry Beasley (Mitsubishi Lancer EVO 4 with a time of 44.74secs. Streckeisen was 3rd fastest with 45.39secs in his Nissan GTR R35.
