Select photos from the Adelaide Summer League Division 2 Ice Hockey game between Unicorns and Stingrays played on 17/11/2024 at the Ice Arena, Adelaide, South Australia. The Stingrays sat above the Unicorns on the ladder. Last year the Division 2 Unicorns took out the Championship but since then many players had moved on so it wouldn’t be the same team. The Stingrays had finished last, but with a change of coach for the 2024-2024 season they were looking pretty sharp. The period was incredibly even with neither team able to find a way forward. Unicorns newbie Bonnie Mechan headed to the bench at 9:28 for roughing, but the penalty kill units of the Unicorns prevented any score for the Stingrays. However, the Stingrays would open the scoring in the very end of the first period with just under a minute left as Blake Smart scored, unassisted. Shots on goal were a miserly 5 to 4 in favour of the Stingrays.
The second period started equally tight. Stingrays Vassili Kathouras was done for tripping at the 16:07 mark but the Unicorns weren’t able to capitalise on the player advantage. Eventually newbie Andrew Sherman equalled the score at 1-all at the 10:08 mark after receiving an assist from Dino Macri. Shots on goal were 6-5 in favour of the Unicorns.
The 3rd period again was similar to the first two periods with the two 2 team so evenly matched. It took until the 8:35 mark to change the score when Stingrays Kris Monks on his wrong foot put up a back handed shot top shelf to put the Stingrays in front and then to go on for the narrow win. Shots on goal had been 5-4 in favour of the Unicorns who will need to put more shots on in future games.
Big thanks to Karen Kutsche for taking the photos (as Frank was playing in the game, along side son Jordan)
