Selected photos from the Australian Ice Hockey League game between the Adelaide Adrenaline and the Melbourne Mustangs played on 19/07/2025 at the Ice Arena, Adelaide, South Australia. Both teams were sitting in the bottom 4, desparate for a win in these final weeks of the season. During the week the Adrenaline and their import coach Jade Galbraith parted ways (mutually) so the coaching duties were left to Gen Foll and Joey MacDougall for the remainder of the season. The Mustangs would be without the services of former NHL player Scott Timmins, Hayden Dawes and Vadim Virjassov, last time they had played in Adelaide. The Mustangs would have the very experienced Anthony Kimlin (normally the Sydney Bears goaltender) as starting goaltender, with Bryan Mackenzie as spare.
An early penalty to Mustangs alternate captain Mike Giorgi at 17:02 for interference gave the Adrenaline an early chance but there would be no change to the nil-all scoreline. The same happened as Adrenaline’s Daniel Chen had a 2min penalty for high-sticking at 14:33. The first score of the game would go the way of Adrenaline’s Julian Friederich scoring at 10:39 of a Chen assist. The Mustangs would level the score with 40secs remaining as Brody Lindal scored (assists Dean Klomp and Robin Vortanov). The Adrenaline with makeshift coaches appeared very energised for this game and wanted to “set the tone“ and the crowd, especially on the small ice were very loud. Shots on goal for the period, Adrenaline 17, Mustangs 10.
The 2nd period opened with the Adrenaline going one-up as Josh Adkins beat Kimlim at 17:13 (assists Coy Prevost, Romans Nekludovs). A delay of game penalty at 13:37 to Mustangs Mac Roy gave the Adrenaline a chance to add to their score on the powerplay, but the Mustangs penalty kill unit didn’t want a bar of it. Adrenaline’s Darcy Flanagan headed to the sin bin at 11:37 for holding but there was no change to the score with the Mustangs on powerplay. The Adenaline were definitely playing with a lot of energy to match the Mustangs. At 7:06 Nathaniel Benson would chime in with a goal of his own to extend the Adrenaline’s lead (assists Nekludovs, Adkins). Shots on goal for the period: Adrenaline a dominating 13 to Mustangs 6.
The 3rd period was frenetic with the Mustangs trying to lift but the Adrenaline managed to withstand every challenge. Ex-NHL player Ty Wishart went to the box for interference at 18:13 and Adrenaline’s Benson made light work of it scoring the Adrenaline’s 4th goal at 17:48 (assists Prevost and Adkins). The Adrenaline held a commanding lead, but there was plenty of the game still to play. Adrenaline’s Friederich had a roughing penalty at 17:35 but his penalty kill unit ensured no change to the score from the Mustangs. Two penalties to Mustangs Giorgi didn’t help their cause, and while on the second, a high-sticking penalty at 11:03, Romans Nekludovs scored on the powerplay to give the Adrenaline a 4 goal lead. There would be no more change in the score or penalties dished out as the Adrenaline took away a much needed, morale boosting win, with a lot of help from the raucous home crowd. Shots on goal for the period saw them dominate again 10 to 2.
